What is Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy?

What is Occupational Therapy for Kids?

Occupational Therapy (OT), sounds like some sort of therapy focused on helping adults recovering from injuries and getting back to work. But in the context of our world at CLDC, we’re referring to pediatric occupational therapy.

Pediatric occupational therapy is about delivering necessary support for children to help them reach important developmental milestones that will improve their everyday life. It’s designed to support how they move, play, learn, and communicate with the world around them.

We use OT to help children learn how to make important connections between their body and the sensory inputs of their environment, and then how to regulate themselves as they express emotions or go about daily routines.

How do things feel, sound, and move for a child and how can we use those sensory experiences to better understand them and help them learn how to stay self-regulated? That’s where OT comes in to help!

At CLDC, our licensed Occupational Therapists assess each child’s unique sensory and motor needs to create personalized treatment plans. We focus on what each child’s body needs to stay regulated, engaged, and ready to learn.

Our job is to ensure your child is engaged in playful OT activities as they learn and practice skills. For example, a balance game isn’t just about fun - it strengthens a child’s core muscles, which in turn supports posture and fine motor control for tasks like handwriting.

What is Speech Therapy for Kids?

Speech therapy can help children build the communication and language skills they need to connect with others and express themselves confidently.

Speech therapy goes beyond learning to say words clearly. It helps children understand how communication works through words, tone, gestures, facial expressions, and other nonverbal cues.

Our licensed Speech-Language Pathologists help children:

  • Strengthen early language development and vocabulary

  • Improve language comprehension and understanding

  • Build confidence in self-expression and conversation

  • Increase speech clarity, fluency, and articulation

  • Develop social communication skills for play and relationships

At CLDC, we use gentle, responsive, and engaging methods to help your child strengthen the foundational capacities needed for language and connection.

Through play, we build skills that carry over into daily life – from sharing ideas and asking questions to making friends and expressing emotions.

CLDC is Here to Help!

At CLDC, we believe every child’s development is a team effort and that’s exactly how we approach therapy. Our Occupational Therapists and Speech-Language Pathologists work hand-in-hand to support core functional capacities related to engagement, shared attention, problem solving, and communication.

Whether it’s through movement in the gym or a fun language activity in a therapy room, every session is designed to build connection, regulation, and back-and-forth communication with the goal of strengthening your child’s foundation of lifelong learning and building relationships.

If you have questions about occupational therapy, speech therapy, or how we can support your child’s growth, we’re here to help.
